How to Update the Taxonomy Code

Ensuring your taxonomy code aligns with your specialty is crucial for timely credentialing. If there's a mismatch, it can cause delays.

Follow these steps below to update your taxonomy code with your specialty


Step 1: Access the NPPES Portal

  • If you don't have access to your NPPES account or forgot your password, select 'Create or Manage an Account'.

  • Follow the steps to create/manage your account, including accepting terms and completing verification to reset your password.


Step 2: Log In to Your Account

  • After resetting your password, return to the NPPES landing page.

  • Enter your User ID and Password to log in.


Step 3: Edit Taxonomy Information

  • Once logged in, scroll down to find your NPI and other details.

  • Click on the Edit icon.

  • You should see a page shown in the photo below, and select the taxonomy code (highlighted in the photo).


Step 4: Navigate to the Taxonomy Page

  • On the taxonomy page, choose your taxonomy code from the drop-down menu according to your specialty.

  • After selecting the correct taxonomy code, click 'Save'.

  • Scroll down and ensure you've marked the updated taxonomy code as the primary one, then proceed by clicking 'Next'.

  • Click next to continue again

  • Click next to continue again.


Step 5: Verify and Submit Updated Information:

Check the Verification box in blue area and click submit

  • Verify all the information.

  • Check the verification box and click 'Submit'.

  • Note the tracking number provided for future reference.
